چکیده

When using a gradient-based method to determine the optical flow field for an image sequence, it is generally appreciated that some spatial pre-filtering of the images is usually needed, particularly for large motion values. However the characteristics of the filter are not generally given. In this paper we analyse the motion measurement from the point of view of sampling theory. We show how an aliasing problem can arise due to undersampling in the temporal domain, and how this problem can be alleviated by appropriate post-sampling spatial filtering. We also demonstrate a connection between this filtering and the methods used to generate the spatial and temporal image intensity gradients.

Filtering requirements for gradient-based optical flow measurement

The accuracy of gradient-based optical flow algorithms depends on the ability to measure intensity gradients accurately. We show how the temporal gradient can be compromised by temporal aliasing arising from motion and how appropriate post-sampling spatial filtering improves the situation. We also demonstrate a benefit of using higher-order gradient estimators.

Robust Tracking with Spatio-Velocity Snakes: Kalman Filtering Approach

Using results from robust Kalman filtering, we present a new Kalman filter-based snake model for tracking of nonrigid objects in combined spatio-velocity space. The proposed model is the stochastic version of the velocity snake, an active contour model for combined tracking of position and velocity of nonrigid boundaries. The proposed model uses image gradient and optical flow measurements alon...

A Computationally Efficient Algorithm for Multi-Focus Image Reconstruction

A method for synthesizing enhanced depth of field digital still camera pictures using multiple differently focused images is presented. This technique exploits only spatial image gradients in the initial decision process. The spatial gradient as a focus measure has been shown to be experimentally valid and theoretically sound under weak assumptions with respect to unimodality and monotonicity. ...

Fast Algebraic Multigrid For Discontinuous Optical Flow Estimation

Multiple moving objects, occluded objects, or even a moving object against the static background give rise to disconti-nuities in the optical ow eld in corresponding image sequences. Uniform global smoothing-based regularization cannot provide accurate estimates if the optical ow is discontinuous. A `weighted anisotropic smoothness'-based regularization technique is proposed for accurately esti...

A combined post-filtering method to improve accuracy of variational optical flow estimation

We present a novel combined post-filtering (CPF) method to improve the accuracy of optical flow estimation. Its attractive advantages are that outliers reduction is attained while discontinuities are well preserved, and occlusions are partially handled. Major contributions are the following: First, the structure tensor (ST) based edge detection is introduced to extract flow edges. Moreover, we ...
